As an exceptionally challenging career path, computer technicians need some form of certification to ensure that they are providing top quality service and programming. Computer programming in the U.S. is handled by the Computing Technology Industry Association or CompTIA – they provide training and certification, and also connect IT professionals with potential employers.
Any future computer technician should start his or her career with a CompTIA A+ certification. It is an entry level exam that tests your competency as an information technology professional.
Two Level Exams
In order to receive a CompTIA A+ certification, you must be able to pass two exams. The first level is the CompTIA A+ 220-901 exam. This one focuses on hardware and networking. As a multiple choice exam, you will have to be tested on the parts of PC and mobile device hardware, as well as perform troubleshooting for networking connectivity issues.
After getting an acceptable score, you can move on to the CompTIA A+ 220-902. This exam focuses instead on the installation and configuration of various operating systems. You will also have to answer questions regarding security and cloud computing. The exam covers the following systems:
- Apple OS X
Excel at Your Job
While CompTIA certification is by no means a requirement for this career path, data collected by CompTIA Workforce Trends report shows that technicians with an A+ certification perform significantly better than their non-certified peers. As many as 53% of IT and business executives agree.
The IT job market is set to become competitive in the next few years, as the field continues to grow. By 2020, employment in the computer occupation will grow by 22%.
Computer technicians who have qualified for the CompTIA A+ certification can increase their edge over the competition even further by getting a Network + certification as well. This test measures your skill as a network technician, covering more than just the basics.
If you want to become a good computer technician, it is best to get yourself certified to improve your skills and to increase your chances of getting hired. A certified technician will always be more desirable to potential employers.
